Can't distinguish / remember distinction between gain & pan dials

Description
The gain and pan dials are basically indistinguishable in Tony.
At the moment they're both the same colour (I'm about to make them different colours in line with SV) but we need a better visual cue than just colour anyway, because (a) the colours in SV are red/green which are not always distinguishable and (b) the fact that they're different colours doesn't help you remember which colour means which thing.
(We discussed this in a Skype call recently and came to the conclusion that pan probably doesn't need to be a dial with full range control anyway -- we're only really interested in centre, left, or right.)

Is there a good control element (widget, whatever) that has three values but is more beautiful/less space-intensive than proper radio buttons? We could use that for left-centre-right
