Description

There is a noticeable difference in performance when zooming / scrolling a colour 3D plot layer in 3.0-beta2a vs. 2.5.

At lower zoom levels (zoomed out, more of the audio file visible) there is noticeable redrawing of the columns when scrolling or zooming, and other perceivable drawing lag.

When zooming far enough that the plot becomes translucent, there is less or no lag.

I think this may be related to #1781 about the colour 3d plot layer spitting out lots of warnings during rendering. Here (admittedly on Linux rather than OSX as in the original report) it's emitting a line to stderr for every column drawn which probably does make a difference.

Not sure whether that's enough to account for the bulk of the difference, but I obviously need to fix that anyway so let's come back to this one. (Note that rendering could be up to 4x slower anyway in 3.0 on a retina Mac, because it's now rendering at retina resolution without using hardware support.)
