Our research is concerned with automatic detection and statistical evaluation of modes in Russian traditional polyphonic vocal music. Yet while applying existing automatic music analysis tools to our ethnomusicological corpus of recordings, we encountered challenges that made us question basic assumptions on which these tools were built: where does a note start? how can we perceive two distinct pitches to represent the same mode degree? what do performers do to control these processes in listeners? We will present the current state of our research and are looking forward to feedback and suggestions.
