Unsatisfactory updates to spectrogram etc on zoom change during playback

(Observed on macOS especially)
- Load one or more files
- Start playback
- Switch to melodic spectrogram
- Zoom in or out a bit
What typically happens is that the layer is blanked out when the zoom level changes, then it starts re-drawing from the centre for a moment, then as the layer scrolls, it is cleared again and an area at the right edge gets re-painted; this then happens again and again while the rest of the visible area is never repainted.
