Chris@909:
Chris@909: # URW++ Design & Development GmbH
Chris@909:
Chris@909: URW++ donated a set of 35 core PostScript Type 1 fonts to the
Chris@909: Ghostscript project , to be available
Chris@909: under the terms of GNU General Public License (GPL).
Chris@909:
Chris@909: Basic Latin (U+0041-U+007A)

Chris@909: # Yannis Haralambous and John
Chris@909: Plaice
Chris@909:
Chris@909: Yannis Haralambous and John Plaice are the authors of Omega
Chris@909: typesetting system, . Omega is an
Chris@909: extension of TeX. Its first release, aims primarily at improving TeX's
Chris@909: multilingual abilities. In Omega all characters and pointers into
Chris@909: data-structures are 16-bit wide, instead of 8-bit, thereby eliminating
Chris@909: many of the trivial limitations of TeX. Omega also allows multiple
Chris@909: input and output character sets, and uses programmable filters to
Chris@909: translate from one encoding to another, to perform contextual
Chris@909: analysis, etc. Internally, Omega uses the universal 16-bit Unicode
Chris@909: standard character set, based on ISO-10646. These improvements not
Chris@909: only make it a lot easier for TeX users to cope with multiple or
Chris@909: complex languages, like Arabic, Indic, Khmer, Chinese, Japanese or
Chris@909: Korean, in one document, but will also form the basis for future
Chris@909: developments in other areas, such as native color support and
Chris@909: hypertext features. ... Fonts for UT1 (omlgc family) and UT2 (omah
Chris@909: family) are under development: these fonts are in PostScript format
Chris@909: and visually close to Times and Helvetica font families. (from the
Chris@909: Omega WWW site). Omega fonts are available subject to GPL
Chris@909: .

Chris@909: # Valek Filippov
Chris@909:
Chris@909: Valek Filippov added Cyrillic glyphs and composite Latin Extended A to
Chris@909: the whole set of the abovementioned URW set of 35 PostScript core
Chris@909: fonts, . The fonts are available under
Chris@909: GPL.

Chris@909: # Wadalab Kanji Comittee
Chris@909:
Chris@909: Between April 1990 and March 1992, Wadalab Kanji Comittee put together
Chris@909: a series of scalable font files with Japanese scripts, in four forms:
Chris@909: Sai Micho, Chu Mincho, Cho Kaku and Saimaru. The font files are
Chris@909: written in custom file format, while tools for conversion into
Chris@909: Metafont and PostScript Type 1 are also supplied. The Wadalab Kanji
Chris@909: Comittee has later been dismissed, and the resulting files can be now
Chris@909: found on the FTP server of the Depertment of Mathematical Engineering
Chris@909: and Information Physics, Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo
Chris@909: .

Chris@909:
Chris@909:
Chris@909: # Young U. Ryu
Chris@909:
Chris@909: Young Ryu is the author of Txfonts, a set of mathematical symbols
Chris@909: designed to accompany text typeset in Times or its variants. In the
Chris@909: documentation, Young adresses the design of mathematical symbols: "The
Chris@909: Adobe Times fonts are thicker than the CM fonts. Designing math fonts
Chris@909: for Times based on the rule thickness of Times = , , + , / , < ,
Chris@909: etc. would result in too thick math symbols, in my opinion. In the TX
Chris@909: fonts, these glyphs are thinner than those of original Times
Chris@909: fonts. That is, the rule thickness of these glyphs is around 85% of
Chris@909: that of the Times fonts, but still thicker than that of the CM fonts."
Chris@909: TX fonts are are distributed under the GNU public license
Chris@909: (GPL). Pointers to their location are available on
Chris@909: .

Chris@909:
Chris@909: # Angelo Haritsis
Chris@909:
Chris@909: Angelo Haritsis has compiled a set of Greek Type 1 fonts, available on
Chris@909: .
Chris@909: The glyphs from this source has been used to compose Greek glyphs in
Chris@909: FreeSans and FreeMono.
Chris@909:
Chris@909: Angelo's licence says: "You can enjoy free use of these fonts for
Chris@909: educational or commercial purposes. All derived works should include
Chris@909: this paragraph. If you want to change something please let me have
Chris@909: your changes (via email) so that they can go into the next
Chris@909: version. You can also send comments etc to the above address."

Chris@909: # Yannis Haralambous and Virach Sornlertlamvanich
Chris@909:
Chris@909: In 1999, Yannis Haralambous and Virach Sornlertlamvanich made a set of
Chris@909: glyphs covering the Thai national standard NF3, in both upright and
Chris@909: slanted shape. The collection of glyphs have been made part of GNU

Chris@909: "Please feel free to foreword this mail to your Oriya friends. No
Chris@909: copyright law is applied for this font. It is totally free!!! Feel
Chris@909: free to modify this using any font editing tools. This is designed for
Chris@909: people like me, who are away from Orissa and want to write letters
Chris@909: home using Computers, but suffer due to unavailability of Oriya
Chris@909: fonts.(Or the cost of the available packages are too much)."

Chris@909: In 1991, Frans Velthuis from the Groningen University, The
Chris@909: Netherlands, released a Devanagari font as Metafont source, available
Chris@909: under the terms of GNU GPL. Later, Anshuman Pandey from the Washington
Chris@909: University, Seattle, USA, took over the maintenance of font. Fonts can
Chris@909: be found on CTAN, . I

Chris@909: set of Oriya metafonts in 1996. Malayalam fonts were created as
Chris@909: uniform stroke only, while Oriya metafonts exist in both uniform and
Chris@909: modulated stroke. From private communication: "It is my intention to
Chris@909: release the fonts under GPL, but not all copies around have this

Chris@909: with the UCS fonts to fill the 2800-28FF range completely. (uniform
Chris@909: scaling is possible to adapt it to any cell size). He also contributed
Chris@909: a free syriac font, whose glyphs (about half of them) are borrowed
Chris@909: from the "Carlo Ator" font freely downloadable from
Chris@909: . Vyacheslav also filled in a few missing
Chris@909: spots in the U+2000-U+27FF area, e.g. the box drawing section, sets of
Chris@909: subscript and superscript digits and capital Roman numbers.

Chris@909: # DMS Electronics, The Sri Lanka Tipitaka Project, and Noah Levitt
Chris@909:
Chris@909:
Chris@909: Noah Levitt found out that the Sinhalese fonts available on the site
Chris@909: are released under GNU GPL, or,
Chris@909: precisely, "Public Domain under GNU Licence
Chris@909: Produced by DMS
Chris@909: Electronics for The Sri Lanka Tipitaka Project" (taken from the font
