OK, this script works now, but it should be using the API

class AddCustomFieldsMultiple < ActiveRecord::Migration
  def self.up
    add_column :custom_fields, :multiple, :boolean, :default => false
  end

  def self.down
    remove_column :custom_fields, :multiple
  end
end
